Strokes of Genius - A Special Needs Program

What is Strokes of Genius?
Our Strokes of Genius Program is thoughtfully designed to provide a safe, supportive, and engaging environment for children with special needs to build confidence and learn essential water safety skills. These private lessons are 20 minutes long and are held at least once per week, allowing students to gradually grow comfortable in the water while developing consistency and trust with their instructor.
We recognize that children with special needs thrive on routine and familiarity. To support their growth and progress, we ask that families commit to a long-term plan. This continuity provides the stability students need to feel secure, build strong relationships, and achieve meaningful milestones in their aquatic journey.
Each session is tailored to meet the unique needs of every student, with a focus on safety, comfort, and enjoyment. Our trained instructors use gentle, individualized teaching methods to help every child succeed at their own pace.
Let’s build safety, confidence, and a love for the water—together.
How does this program work?
Personalized Instruction
Each child is matched with an instructor trained to work with children with special needs. Students stay with that instructor for every lesson. Lessons are one-on-one to ensure personalized attention and comfort.
Short, Frequent Lessons
Lessons are 20 minutes long and take place at least once a week. This format respects students’ attention spans and energy levels, while still offering consistent exposure and practice in the water.
Stability and Routine
We believe stability is key to success. Children attend sessions at the same time each week, with the same instructor. This helps build trust and reduce anxiety around transitions.
Long-Term Commitment
Families are encouraged to commit to the program for a longer period—ideally a full season or several months. Water safety and comfort don’t happen overnight, and steady progress is best supported with ongoing participation.
Goals & Communication
Our team works with parents to set realistic goals based on each child’s abilities. We provide regular updates and encourage open communication, so families always know how their child is progressing.
Safe, Adapted Environment
Our pools are sensory-aware, with warm water, minimal noise distractions, and adapted equipment as needed to make lessons as comfortable as possible.
What does my child need to do to join?
Please fill out the form below to be added to our waitlist. We have very limited pool availablity and instructors. The pools we currently use are Marcus and Carver Pools near Yuma High. We do not have a pool in the Foothills and do not use private residences.
A Parent or Guardian’s Commitment
Since consistency is so important, we ask that families commit to attending lessons regularly for an extended period (a season, or several months). This helps your child build trust, routine, and progress over time.
Basic Swim Gear

Intake Form & Brief Consultation
Before starting, we’ll have you fill out a short intake form so we can learn about your child’s needs, strengths, and sensitivities. We may also schedule a quick conversation to make sure we can provide the right support.
Willingness to Try
Your child doesn’t need to have any swimming experience. We welcome all ability levels! The only requirement is a willingness to try—we’ll support them every step of the way.
Medical or Therapy Info (if needed)
If your child has specific medical conditions, mobility needs, or uses assistive devices, please share that with us so we can make accommodations and keep your child safe and comfortable.
